M3 Family Medicine Electives
The following electives are offered by the Department
of Family and Community Medicine as Graded Electives. These
courses run for one month and students will receive a grade. Taking
a graded elective in the third-year curriculum will reduce by one,
the number of electives a student will be required to take in the
fourth-year.
A brief description of each Family Medicine elective
follows. More detailed descriptions of these electives are available
in the Office of the Registrar: MEB 3rd floor, 456-8873.

Ambulatory Family Medicine
A one-month elective which occurs at the Racine Family Practice
Center, a family practice residency training site. The student will
be exposed to a broad spectrum of illnesses across a varied patient
population with emphasis on providing care to the underserved.

Belize International Health Program
A one-month outpatient rotation in a medically underserved country.
The elective will offer an oportunity to appreciate and describe
cost-effective approaches to medical diagnosis and treatment, demonstrate
effective team-building skills, identify prevalent cross-cultural
and underserved issues in primary care, recognize and treat the
illnesses and conditions common to both the US and Belize population,
and describe the delivery of health care in a multi-cultural region
of the world.

Family-Centered Obstetrics
A one-month inpatient experience on labor and delivery. The student
will aprticipate in the care of women in labor and delivery of their
babies, acquire a family medicine perspective on the roles of the
patient, family, nurse, family physician etc., and have fun delivering
babies.

Integrating Complementary & Alternative
Therapies into Primary Care
A one-month experience in the outpatient setting. Students will
receive skill training in providing alternative therapies, ie, acupuncture
energetics, prescribing homeopathics, osteopathic manimpulation,
prolotherapy and prescribing herbal remedies and nutritional supplements.
