Disclose patient communications without patient's consent Assure and maintain confidentiality
Preach, moralize or imply you doubt the person Listen, affirm and say "I am sorry that you have been hurt" 
Minimize the impact of violence Express "I'm concerned for your safety"
Express outrage with the perpetrator Tell the victim "You have a right to be safe and respected"
Imply the patient is responsible for abuse Say "The abuse is not your fault"
Recommend couples counseling Recommend a support group or individual counseling for the patient
Direct the patient to leave the relationship Identify community resources and encourage the patient to develop a safety plan
Take charge and do everything for the patient Offer to help the patient contact a shelter, law enforcement or other resources
