The 24th Forum for Behavioral Science
in Family Medicine
Downtown Chicago: September 18 - September 21, 2003
This Year's Theme:
"Building Connections, Developing Competencies"
About this year's theme:
Connections and competencies
are essential ingredients for educators and health care professionals
as we work with residents, patients and colleagues. Our theme challenges
us to build and maintain important connections in concert with a
renewed commitment to educational and clinical training experiences
that advance the competencies of our learners.
The educational
purpose of the Forum is to assist primary care faculty in understanding
and developing their academic roles in family medicine residency
education. Academic roles include common faculty practices in educational
research, instructional design and teaching. Because the meeting
focuses on behavioral sciences, the purpose is explicitly targeted
to psychologists, social workers and physicians interested in behavioral
science education.
The Forum has three key
objectives that are supplemented by session objectives specific
to each of the teaching workshops and seminars. These are the three
overall objectives and specific details about them:
Build professionally helpful connections to those
with diverse backgrounds
- Through networking and
instructional sessions, participants will report one or more productive
interactions with colleagues from different professional and cultural
backgrounds
Plan, provide and/or evaluate effective educational
experiences in behavioral science
- Participants will acquire
one or more instructional skills for teaching the required (ACGME)
competencies
- Participants will acquire
one or more instructional skills for assessing the required (ACGME)
competencies
Share new ideas in behavioral science teaching
and patient care
- Through resource exchanges with presenters
and co-participants, participants will acquire new methods and
tools for teaching and/or patient care.
The Forum is sponsored
by the Department of Family and Community Medicine, Medical College
of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, Wisconsin and the Society of Teachers of
Family Medicine. The planning committee is national in scope as
is the draw of the conference participants. The Forum is designed
to be an intimate gathering (<150 people) to help each participant
to attain their learning goals. The
Medical College of Wisconsin designates this activity for a maximum
of 15.75 category 1 credits toward the AMA Physician's Recognition
Award. Each physician should claim only those credits that he/she
actually spent in the activity. Continuing education credits are
provided by the CME office of the Medical College of Wisconsin.
